Not all the gallerist admit this explicitely, but some times we wonder if so called art lovers are essentially diffirent from collectors.
Collectors are the people who purchase art works they prefer, needless to say, but art lovers don’t. Indeed art lovers may turn out to be a collector by chance. But they are quite few.
And, from our experiences, there are many kind of chances which turn an art lover to be a true collector. The chance veries collector to collector. That means we could not know it beforehand. No rules at all.
So you could say, there couldn’t be any marketing in the art business. If it is true, any activities aiming for expanding art lovers are, essentially speaking, not so effective as it appears.
A true collector, at least at the begining, was the people who encounter some form of art work and fascinated by it and could not help but owns it. It is like “falling with love at first sight”.
Then he/she begins following this particular artist, wants to help him/her make progress. And gradually collection becomes a part of his/her life.
So collection looks like an investment involving his/her energy, time and money as well as taking risks. It require them at least a certain amount of commitment.
On the contrary, art lovers are the people who don’t make those commitment on the artists. As far as commitment concerned, meaning for the collectors, money doesn’t count, regardless it is high or low.
Based on above impressions, we think there is only one marketing method, if we still want to use this word, in the art business. That is; to focus on providing excellent works of our artists to the public including art lovers. This might seems too simple and mediocre, but it would be the fastest way to increase collecors who truely support the artists. Other activities focusing on just increasing art lovers would be circumstancial.

ART TAIPEI 2009 · Sep 1, 10:48 pm

Exhibited the works of Rieko Sakurai, Kenichi Yokono, Tomohiro Takagi and Ai Haibara in cooperation with a Taiwanese gallery, Butchart International, Contemporary Art Space at “ART TAIPEI 2009”. The fair was held at Taipei from August 27 to September 1st.

Although the preview show was not so crowded as last year, so every participants worried a bit, but the audiences gradually increased and on Saturday and Sunday the venue was pretty much crowded. Also it seemed a lot of galleries made good sales and even some said the sales might be more better than last year. This might indicate that the Asian art market, not to be limited to Taiwan, is now recovering from the almost-one-year recession. That means Asian collectors are getting back their confidence in collection. In fact, after returning from the fair, we heard from Chinese and Korean gallerist that the collectors had begun coming back to their galleries in the past several months.
We hope the Japanese collectors will follow the same trend.

Happy enough, by the way, all of our artists attracted much attention from many audiences including collectors, curators and gallerists. Through those encounters, we learned once again that the purpose of participating an art fair is not only for the sales but for establishing connection with the people in the art sphere.

You could view several photos taken at the fair on the Japanese “What’s new“ corner.

Exhibitions by Ren Jing and Ji Young · May 30, 06:17 pm

We are happy to announce that Ren Jing, a young Chineses artist, whom we already introduced on the corner of “Emerging artists”, will hold a solo exhibition in October this year and Ji Young, a young Korean artist, will do in July 2010. Glance up their recent works on the corner of “Artists and works“.

Both artists are trying to depict their memories in the form of stories evoking something in their/our mind, which, even if they are just tiny fragments, are still vivid in our mind and sometimes make us reflect upon our ordinary lives.
Speaking from a different angle, they try to find out miracles hidden deep in our memories.

If you are in request of their works, please let us know.
Please expect thier exhibition!

??Ren Jing

??Ji Young
